Energy Tips

Dreading those wintertime heating bills ? This year, be proactive, and you could save a bundle.

Tips For Saving Energy This Winter:
  • Reassess heating usage. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically maintain 68 degrees during the day and 55 at night or while you're away from home. Prevent heating unused rooms by closing vents and doors.
  • Maintain your furnace. Replace or clean the filter on a regular basis. Schedule regular appointments for a technician to lubricate, clean and adjust your furnace.
  • Run appliances wisely. Wait to run your dishwasher and washing machine until they're full. Clean your clothes using the washing machine's cold-water setting.
  • Adjust bath time. Take shorter showers. Set your water heater to 120 degrees. Add a flow-reducing showerhead.
  • Invest in your windows. Choose replacement windows with Energy Star ratings. Use insulating curtains and shutters, but let sunlight in during the day.
  • Give electronics a break. Unplug unused appliances and electronics. Set the sleep mode for your computer.
  • Seal leaks. Replace caulking and weather strips surrounding doors and windows. Fill gaps around ducts, vents and pipes.
