I Smell Gas! Propane
Troubleshooting Tips > I Smell Gas! Propane
Propane is a very safe fuel. But as with any energy source, there are steps you should take to further ensure your safety. If you detect a gas leak, immediately evacuate everyone from the building and call Shipley Energy or the fire department from a neighbor's phone.
If you smell gas:
  • Put out any open flames.
  • Do NOT create static electricity by: operating a phone, lighting matches, or operating electric switches or appliances.
  • Evacuate the building immediately!
  • Call 9-1-1.
  • Have your system checked by a professional before you re-enter the building.
If your pilot won't light:
  • Read your appliance operating manual before attempting to light a pilot.
  • Some applicanes have a safety feature that prevent the pilot from lighting.
  • When all else fails, shut off the gas and call Shipley Energy.
